POSITIVELY PREGNANT

PREGNANCY

MILESTONE
DEVELOPMENTS

Conglatulations! You just found out you are pregnant! Excitement, fear, anticipation and happiness is coursing through now! That’s the first few days or weeks of peace (if you are lucky). Then it suddenly hits you. You find yourself running to the bathroom and hurling your guts out till there’s nothing to throw up. Hello morning sick ness…or all-day sickness! You have arrived!

So how can we survive this hideous period? Introducing the morning sickness survival guide!

Fertilisation

Takes place in the fallopian tube, which connects the ovary with the uterus.

Sex determination

Occurs at the moment of fertilisation. Mum gives baby an ‘X’ chromosome; Dad gives either an ‘X’ or ‘Y’ – girls have ‘XX’ chromosomes, boys have ‘XY’.

Implantation

Happens on the sixth day – the developing baby attaches to the wall of the uterus for nourishment and begins to grow.

First trimester (weeks 1-12)

You won’t look very pregnant during the first three months. But you may notice some of the common signs of early pregnancy. These are a missed or light period, nausea, tender nipples and breasts, bloating of the abdomen, fatigue and frequent urination.

Second trimester (weeks 13-28)

The second three months
are often called the ‘golden trimester’. Some of the minor discomforts of the first trimester are gone. You may now start to look pregnant.

Third trimester (weeks 29-40)

By now you may be feeling a bit bulky. Getting comfortable may be hard, but take heart. This is the home-stretch. Shortly before delivery, your baby moves down into your pelvis (except for the first pregnancy, in which case it takes about four weeks). This may make it easier for you to breathe.
